How Long Should Your Household Appliances Last?

How Long Should Your Household Appliances Last?

From our ovens to our dishwashers to our washing machines, we rely on our household appliances to feed our families, clean our clothes and generally make our busy lives a little bit easier. But appliances don’t come cheap, and when they break it can cause a lot of stress.
So how long should you expect your household appliances to last? There’s no hard and fast rule of course, some brands last longer than others, and the way you treat your appliances will have an impact, but as a general guideline we’ve compiled the following list:

Dishwashers
With proper maintenance, the average dishwasher can last between 9 and 13 years. If you run your dishwasher regularly, clean out the filters often, and get regular servicing your dishwasher will run at peak performance for longer.
Using the machine regularly is important because without regular operation the rubberised seals and gaskets become brittle and are more likely to break.

Ovens
Whether you have an electric or gas appliance makes a big difference. Electric ovens use heating elements that are more likely to break down over time, while gas ovens have an ignition system which is better able to stand the test of time.
You can expect an electric oven to last around 13 years, while a gas oven will last around 15.

Washing Machines & Dryers
Washing machines and dryers tend to have a similar life expectancy, but it comes down to how often you’re using the machines. If you have a large family and you’re doing many loads of laundry every week you’ll probably get around ten years out of your machines, if you’re using the machines less frequently you might get as many as 14.
When it comes to the type of washing machine a top loading washing machine is likely to outlast a front loader.

Miele Introduces Their New Washer-Dryer Range

Miele Introduces Their New Washer-Dryer Range

Late last year Miele introduced the newest in their washer-dryer range – the Miele WT1 washer-dryer series, and it’s a doozy. Built on the foundation of efficiency, style and convenience the new washer-dryer lets you wash and dry 4 kilograms of laundry in less than three hours without any manual intervention at all.
Choosing a washer-dryer combo for your laundry is a fantastic way to save space in tight quarters, but historically they haven’t always had the performance to satisfy high volume users. This new range is changing that reputation, with outstanding overall performance.

TwinDos Functionality
The new machines come standard with Miele’s exclusive TwinDos system (which has been independently verified by the German Hohensten Test Institute as being the best detergent dispensing system on the market) automatically dispenses detergent during the wash cycle. With high auto dispense accuracy, the TwinDos saves you money too, by ensuring that you only use the amount of detergent you need in any given cycle.

PowerWash 2.0
The WT1 Miele range brings you short cycle times thanks to PowerWash 2.0. With precious loading, spray action wetting and shorter interim spin cycles the PowerWash 2.0 functionality gets the job done quickly – and reduces overall energy consumption at the same time.

Convenience at the Press of a Button
The range also comes with a Delay-Start function so you can set it to start at any time you please. SteamCare reduces the need for ironing, or can freshen up clothes that were only worn briefly and don’t yet need a full wash. And the honeycomb dryer drum is especially gentle on fabric, extending the life of your garments.
The new range has two models available, the WTH130WPM which has a 4kg capacity, and the WTZH730WPM which can handle a 5kg wash. Both models have an energy rating and WELS water rating of 4.

Washing Machine Problems

Washing Machine  Problems

While many people own a washing machine, many of them do not know what makes it click. For many of them, their washing machine resembles a domestic version of the earth as it spins around the sun. All they know about their washing machine is that:

  •  It resembles a bucket or a tub that fills with water
  •  It uses elaborate technology to fill, spin, wash and drain the water periodically
  •  It returns clean clothes after completing the cycle in an hour or so
  • With such superficial knowledge, you can well understand their bemusement when they find that their machine does not work properly and needs washing machine repair services.

However, understanding the mechanisms behind a washing machine is not difficult. Two water supply hoses deliver hot and cold water to the water inlet valve inside the washer housing. Based on the temperature setting selected, the water mixes and enters the interior of the tub. The washing machine’s control panel has a pressure switch. This switch determines the extent to which the tub contains water – again, based on the washing load selected. Once the water level reaches the desired levels, the water inlets close and the wash cycle commences. Front-loading machines have revolving tubs while top-loading models use agitators. Timers present inside the washer control indicate that the machine needs to drain the dirty water. This cycle continues until the completion of the wash cycle.

Regular care and maintenance can keep your washing machine in perfect working condition. However, wear and tear issues could make you look for quality washing machine repair services. Common problems that you could face with your washing machine are:

  • Washing machines do not work when you switch them on: Usually, power outlet issues could cause this. In this case, you would need the help of your electricians. However, if this is not the case, your machine might have a defective part. This could be a defective timer, motor or lid switch.
  •  Washing machines work, but do not spin: A belt powers the spinning motion of the machine. Therefore, if the machine works but does not spin, it could be that your machine has a broken belt or coupling.
  • Washing machines do not take in water: If your water outlet is working fine, you might need to check the water fill valve, the water temperature switch or the timer.
  • Washing machines do not drain the water completely: Usually an SOS to the plumber could help in unclogging your drains. However, if you don’t have a clogged drain, a defective pump or drain hose could be your problem.

Refrigerators And Freezers

Refrigerators And Freezers

Most refrigerators have more than one light. Replacement is easiest when at least one bulb is still working. When you first notice a burnt-out bulb, count the total number of bulbs in your unit. Unscrew any burnt-out bulbs and take them with you to the hardware store to make sure you buy the same type.

Buy enough for the whole refrigerator so you have spares as the other bulbs wear out. Whenever frost gets to be 1/4-inch thick, it’s time to defrost. Never use ice picks or similar tools to loosen ice. Some refrigerator shelves contain cooling fluids. These racks take longer to defrost. Don’t force the process, as the racks are easily damaged. Every year or two, vacuum underneath and behind the unit. After unplugging the unit, use a crevice tool or feather duster to help you clean the coil and all metal parts.

You may have to remove a panel to get access. This will make your unit last longer and run more efficiently. Keep the door seals and the surfaces they close against clean to reduce energy consumption and extend the life of the seal. If you close the door on a piece of paper and it slips out without resistance, it’s time to replace the door seal. Replacing the seal is more complicated than it looks, so if you’re not especially handy, it’s a job better left to the professionals.

Clothes Dryers

Clothes Dryers

Cleaning the lint trap before each load will prevent a fire hazard, save energy and make your clothes dry faster. To avoid wasting energy and over-drying clothes, use the automatic dry cycle. Once a year or so, use a dry paint brush to clean lint from the corners and cracks in the interior of the dryer and around the door. If you often wash athletic shoes and similar items, check to see if the manufacturer of your dryer sells a rack accessory that mounts to the back of the dryer. It will help such items dry quicker and more quietly.

If you have a traditional sheet-metal dryer exhaust vent, you should clean it about every five years. Disconnect the pipe at both ends and use a broom handle to push a rag through the pipe to remove the accumulated lint. If screws were used to hold the pipes together, replace them with foil tape. The screws catch lint flowing through the duct and can cause clogging. If you have the very thin, cheap plastic dryer exhaust tubes, they may be flammable and should be replaced.
